When artist Amy J. Schultz was invited to help a friend make homecoming mums, she took her camera to document the moment. But she quickly realized what she was seeing was bigger than ribbons and bows.

"I'm realizing, sort of through the lens of my camera, what I saw was community building," Schultz said. "So I really wanted to explore that."

That experience was the basis for her current exhibit at the Arlington Museum of Art, "Mumentous: The Upsizing of a Texas Tradition."

The Museum chose Schultz to be its 2019 artist in residence. She says the Museum does more than just support a community of artists — it supports the community. And that level of appreciation goes both ways. 

"To me what makes Arlington so special is the people," Schultz said. "People said, 'I want to be a part of that vision, I think there's a way I can help.' To me, that is Arlington."
