Census Day is April 1, 2020

March 16, 2020 Update: The Census Day event has been canceled in accordance with CDC guidelines to slow the spread of coronavirus.

April 1, 2020 is National Census Day, and The City of Arlington is celebrating this American tradition. A complete census count benefits us all – helping fund everything from police and firefighters to teachers.

“Our citizen Census Complete Count Committee, city staff, and community partners have been working diligently for over a year to make sure that Arlington has a complete count in the 2020 Census. I am so proud of the work that has been done, but we’re not done yet. Our goal is to beat the self-response rate from the last Census. Now we’re asking everyone in Arlington to make sure that they do their part to be counted in our community,” said Sarah Stubblefield, the City's Census Committee Chair.

The Census Day date is significant, as well. You’ll be receiving an invitation to respond to the census in mid-March. Your answers will be based on who is living in your home April 1.

To mark the occasion, The City of Arlington is inviting the entire community to Hugh Smith Recreation Center (1815 New York Ave.) April 1, from 4-7 p.m. There will be free food, outdoor games and a chance to complete your census form. Residents are free to come and go any time during the three hours. Arlington Parks & Recreation and Arlington Public Library will be on site as well, offering free, family-friendly activities.

Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams will be joined by Arlington City Council members and other elected officials including Tarrant County Commissioner Devan Allen and State Representative Chris Turner (D-Arlington).

“Everyone counts in Arlington and by answering just 10 questions, you can help us shape the future of The American Dream City,” said Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams. “By completing the 2020 Census, you can help provide the police and fire services that keep us all safe and help ensure that Arlington students have access to quality schools, free lunches and after-school care.”

"An accurate count is essential to ensuring that our state and cities receive their fair share of federal resources to help pay for education, health care, transportation, and much more," said Rep. Turner. "Community partnerships are critically important to this effort, and I am glad to join with the City of Arlington to increase participation and make sure everyone in our community is counted."

If you’re unable to attend the Census Day event, responding to the Census has never been easier. Once you receive an invitation, you can respond online, over the phone or through the mail. Please take ten minutes for your hometown. Because in Arlington — everyone counts.
