The University of Texas at Arlington is home to more than 43,000 students. The vibrant, diverse campus is one of Arlington's most important institutions. And an accurate Census count helps ensure the University receives the funding necessary to maintain its level of excellence.

But young Americans have historically been underrepresented in Census data. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 45 percent of 18 to 24 years olds do not live at home. Their frequent moves and likelihood of living in apartments make them tough to count.

Research also shows because these Americans were so young during the last Census, they often don't know they're supposed to fill out a questionnaire. According to a new study, 39 percent of 18 to 24 year olds say they're not familiar with the 2020 Census, and more than 18 percent say they're unlikely to respond at all.

In an effort to reverse this trend, UTA public relations students have been leading the charge to raise awareness of the Census and explain its importance.

The students are currently in the midst of a Census blitz, which includes face-to-face messaging on campus, social media posts and outreach to other student organizations. The students also created a flowchart explaining if someone need to respond to the Census. (Students still living with their parents will be counted in their parents' home.) You can follow the Census blitz online with the hashtag #MavsCount. The campaign will be entered into a college contest, sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America.

A complete Census count benefits everyone in Arlington. Your information is safe and can never be used against you. And it's never been easier to respond. Once you receive an invitation in your mailbox, respond to the Census online, over the phone or through the mail. Because in Arlington, everyone counts.
