Population growth shown by crowd of people

In mid-March, homes across Arlington and the United States began receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census.

April 1, 2020 is Census Day. Today isn’t the deadline but a benchmark for Americans to respond to Census questions about how many people are living or sleeping in their home as of today.

By responding to the Census, you’re helping shape the future of Arlington. An accurate count affects everything from representation in Congress to funding for our schools and first responders.

Each year, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the current population based on prior Census counts. The recently released 2019 estimates show impressive growth in Arlington.

Based on this data, the Arlington-Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area saw the largest population growth in the country since 2010. According to the Census bureau, our region grew by 1,206,599 people, or 19 percent.

The Bureau also ranked growth by county. According to estimates, Tarrant County grew from 1.8 million people in 2010 to 2.1 million in 2019, making it the fifth fastest-growing county in the United States. Six of the top ten counties with the largest population gains were in Texas.

Our region has continued to grow since these 2019 estimates were established. The best way to show that growth is with an accurate 2020 count.

As of March 30, 2020, Arlington had a self-response rate of 36.8 percent. That is ahead of the Texas average (31.3 percent) and slightly above the U.S. average (36.2 percent.)

Responding to the Census has never been easier. You can now respond online, over the phone or through the mail.

It takes about ten minutes to complete your Census, and your answers will shape the future of Arlington for the next decade.

Thank you for making sure everyone counts in Arlington.
