The Arlington Museum of Art has reopened with a new exhibit — "Knox Martin: Living Legend."
Martin was born in Colombia and is known for his oversized, colorful work. At nearly 100 years old, he is still creating today and was able to collaborate with the Arlington Museum of Art on the new exhibit.
"Almost everything you'll see here is extremely large scale. If you've ever been to our space before, you know we have these huge galleries. It's really fun to see how they get filled up so nicely," said Lily Williams, the museum's Marketing Coordinator. The exhibit also includes some of Martin's never-before-seen pieces in the smaller gallery upstairs.
The Museum has been closed since the coronavirus pandemic arrived earlier this year. Williams says while her team was able to maintain community connection through social media, there's nothing like seeing art in-person.
"We have been doing everything in our power to make sure when we come back, we do it as responsibly and safely as possible," Williams said.
The Museum already had plans in the works to install QR codes throughout the exhibit, letting patrons interact with the pieces on their phones. Now, that technology is allowing the Museum to do away with brochures and other frequently-touched objects.
"I think the sort of fun, playful vibe of the exhibit is really what people are needing right now," Williams said. "Art can really be an escape for people, and we're hoping to provide a little bit of levity."
"Knox Martin: Living Legend" will be on display through Oct. 11, 2020. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children. You can purchase tickets by clicking here.
