Arlington Animal Services is excited to announce the recipient of the Bill McCart Volunteer of the Year Award for 2022 - Donna McPherson!

Donna has been a volunteer at Arlington Animal Services since May 2021! Donna is a dedicated City of Arlington volunteer. Outside of Animal Services, she also volunteers for the Arlington Police Department and Levitt Pavilion while also working her full time job. She is always willing to help the shelter staff and animals in any way that she is able. Donna has hosted the New Volunteer Orientation. volunteered at the PetSmart Highlands location, participated in Rescue Readers events, and so much more!

Since May 2021, Donna has volunteered over 105 hours and is always such a positive light for staff and citizens.

  1. What’s your name?  Donna McPherson
  2. Nick name?  BARBIE because I had a corvette convertible similar to the Barbie vette- NOT because I look like Barbie! 
  3. How long have you been a volunteer?  Three years
  4. Where are you from?  Chicago, Illinois, but lived in Texas since 1979 so I tell people Chicago is where I was born and raised. Texas is home
  5. What music CD do you like?  Having Sirius XM, I currently listen to 80s hair metal bands, but that changes all the time since I love all kinds of music
  6. What’s the last movie you saw?  Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning- love those action movies!
  7. What’s your favorite animal?  Dogs are my favorite; however, I wanted to be a vet as a kid so while that didn't work out, I love and support animals in a different way
  8. What’s your favorite reality show?  Honestly, I don't watch reality shows- my life is already enough reality drama!!
  9. What book are you reading right now?  Not reading any books right now.
  10. Where was your last vacation?  Ruidoso, New Mexico, after the races were over. Enjoyed the mountains and did a lot of exploring in that area- I love to travel and go off the beaten path of tourist traps
  11. What’s your favorite quote or saying?  My favorite quote is from Walt Disney, "The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." The other is from Oscar Wilde, "Be yourself- everyone else is already taken."
  12. What's your favorite hobby?  Renovation and DIY on my house. Every house I've purchased, I can see exactly what to do; although the projects don't seem to end! 
  13. How much time do you spend volunteering per week?  I work full-time, so I fit volunteering in where I can, usually on the weekends and at night if available. most of my free time is spent volunteering somewhere. I volunteer not only for AAS, but also the Arlington Police Dept and the Levitt Pavilion in downtown.
  14. What do you enjoy most about volunteering?  It's fun, makes me happy to support a hard-working, passionate team reach their goals, learn new things, meet fabulous people who become part of my family, know I am doing something important to better our community, and it keeps my mind and body active.
