Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Art and Essay Contest is Taking Submissions

Arlington ISD students in junior high and high school can win scholarships by participating in the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. “Advancing the Dream” Celebration Art and Essay Contest. Students will be judged on creativity, originality and how they encompass the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee’s theme: Advancing the Dream: Moving Toward Unity, Justice and Peace.  

ART CONTEST 

Students must design original drawings or use original computer graphics. The art piece may be submitted in full color or black and white on an 8.5 by 11-inch piece of drawing paper. Submissions for the contest are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022. For additional information, click here.  

ESSAY CONTEST 

Students must submit an original essay typed double-spaced, and it must not exceed 1,500 words. The content of each essay submission should include a minimum of three strategies/ideas of how students can affect positive change in unifying our nation, ensuring justice and equality for all while staying committed to King’s vision for peaceful coexistence. Students must submit an entry form along with their essay. Submissions for the contest are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022. For additional information, click here.  

PRIZES 

Six scholarships to help defray the cost of college tuition and books will be awarded to the top three students in each category. The winning art design will also be used for promotional and commemorative purposes associated with the Arlington MLK Celebration. 

  • First Place — $1,000 Scholarship 
  • Second Place — $750 Scholarship
  • Third Place — $500 Scholarship 

ABOUT THE ARLINGTON MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATION COMMITTEE INC. 

Organized in 1989 and established as a non-profit in 1990, the MLK Celebration Committee has been an active contributor to the community for over thirty years. The MLK Celebration Committee has given scholarships to graduating students, donated time and resources to the community while continuing to push forward the message and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The committee is supported by the following organizations:
