A total of 600 pets received vaccinations and 377 a microchip thanks to two well-attended events held with community partner Operation Kindness at Arlington Animal Services. The first event provided free pet vaccines and microchips on Jan. 14 and the second was a low-cost event held on Feb. 11 to help pets and the community.

“Operation Kindness is proud to partner with the City of Arlington and Arlington Animal Services to bring affordable vaccinations, microchips and wellness services to the community,” said David Maldonado, Senior Manager of Lifesaving Partnerships at Operation Kindness. “By bringing these services to the community, our goals are to help keep pets in their loving homes and increase the number of vaccinated pets in the community, which keeps pets healthier.”

February was celebrated as National Responsible Pet Ownership month, but it is always important to ensure pets are licensed and vaccinations current to protect against rabies and other diseases. Arlington is abundant with wildlife, making it especially important to keep pets rabies vaccines current. Learn more about rabies, including facts and safety guidelines, through the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) website.

If you, or someone you know has a dog or cat, is it microchipped? The HSUS offers more information about the importance of using technology through microchips to help protect your pet. If a pet becomes lost, identification tags with owner contact information is good, but a microchip provides the best protection to help a pet get reunited in case their tag is missing. A veterinarian’s office or the Animal Services Center can quickly scan the lost animal for a chip to retrieve owner information.

“As local shelters struggle with capacity and space challenges, ensuring that more pets are microchipped will help expedite stray or lost pets returning to their families,” said Maldonado. “We are excited to continue our partnership and help even more pets and the people who love them.”

Special appreciation to Operation Kindness for their partnership and the successful events to help make Arlington neighborhoods stronger and safer for pets and people.
