The American Dream Story of John Blake

John Blake is living his American Dream as the Executive Vice President of Public Affairs for the Texas Rangers. 

Blake transitioned into the role of Executive Vice President, Public Affairs in January 2022. He oversees the organization’s communications efforts, including the areas of media and public relations, broadcasting, alumni initiatives, photography, archives, and publications while also having involvement with special projects and initiatives.

He had served as the Rangers Executive Vice President, Communications since November 2008, when he rejoined the organization after three years (2006-08) as Vice President, Media Relations for the Boston Red Sox.

2023 marks his 45th year in professional baseball. John originally joined the Rangers in November 1984 and served as Media Relations Director, Vice President of Public Relations, and Senior Vice President of Communications in two decades with the Rangers organization (1984-2004). During his tenure in Texas, he also has had communications responsibilities for Southwest Sports Group from 1999-2004 and the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars from 1999-2002.

Blake was with the Baltimore Orioles from 1979-1984 as Assistant Public Relations Director and Media Information Director. He also served as Sports Information Director at Georgetown University from 1977-79 and was a radio broadcaster for the Hoyas’ nationally-ranked men’s basketball team before going to Texas.

Blake has also held positions as Chief Operating Officer of the Northern Baseball League, Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the Texas Collegiate Baseball League, and Vice President of Communications for Ryan-Sanders Baseball. He was the Director of Information for the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.

The 2020 World Series at Globe Life Field marked the 30th time that Blake has worked in a communications role at Major League Baseball’s Fall Classic. He also will serve as the public relations officer for Team Dominican Republic during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

He was the recipient of the 1993 Robert O. Fishel Award from Major League Baseball for public relations excellence and the 2004 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award from the Dallas-Fort Worth BBWAA chapter. Blake was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022 and received the 2020 Arlington Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Media Award.

A 1977 graduate of Georgetown, John and his wife Harriet have two children, Christopher and Rebecca and live in Grapevine.
