APD Detention Officers Working at Desk

The Arlington Police Department is now hiring Detention Officers.

Detention Officers are non-sworn APD personnel who staff and work in the Arlington City Jail. Please continue reading to learn more about the Detention Officer application process and applicant requirements.

For those interested in a future opportunity to serve as a police officer, the department will accept four years of continuous service as an APD Detention Officer AND at least 60 hours of college credit in lieu of the standard four-year college degree requirement for APD officers. 

Detention Officer Minimum Standards

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Have no felony or Class A misdemeanor convictions, including deferred adjudications.
  4. Have no misdemeanor convictions, including deferred adjudications, above the grade of Class C within the past 10 years.
  5. Have no DWI convictions, including deferred adjudications.
  6. Have no family violence convictions, including deferred adjudications.
  7. Not be on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class C misdemeanor.
  8. Be of good character and have a stable work and driving record.
  9. Have no family members working for the Arlington Police Department.
  10. Must have a valid driver's license.
  11. Have no tattoos on the neck, face, or hands except for one wedding band.

This position requires the following pre-employment checks:

  • Detailed criminal background processing
  • Psychological examination
  • EyeDetect examination
  • Drug and Alcohol testing
  • Medical examination

Benefits

Starting pay for Detention Officers is $19.64 per hour. Additional shift differential pay is also available for Detention Officers who work certain shifts.
