The City of Arlington is honored to receive recognition from the American Planning Association Texas Chapter for its comprehensive Transportation Advisory Committee Report and innovative transportation initiatives.
The Transportation Advisory Committee Report, presented to City Council in September 2017, was named among the state's best planning projects for 2018 at the APA's Texas Planning Awards Program on Oct. 19 in Galveston. The City Council-appointed committee, made up of 31 Arlington residents and stakeholders, spent a year researching and discussing the latest innovations in transportation technology to develop its transportation vision.
In its report, the Committee identified populations to be served, key destinations that require service and six priority corridors to fully serve Arlington's transportation needs. The report also includes recommendations for specific modes of transportation, ranging from high speed rail to autonomous shuttles, to connect people to and from destination points within the six corridors. The City has already implemented an on-demand rideshare service, in partnership with Via, as well as autonomous shuttles, including the one year off-street Milo pilot and the recently launched on-street Drive.ai pilot.
"We are excited that the work of the Transportation Advisory Committee and the City's innovative transportation initiatives have received recognition from the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association," Strategic Planning Manager Lyndsay Mitchell said. "We continue to work to be on the forefront of advancements in mobility and technology."
The Texas Planning Awards Program recognizes outstanding efforts in planning achievements and planning leadership in Texas. These awards represent the state's highest planning honors. The Awards Selection Committee evaluated nominees based on originality and innovation, engagement, implementation and effectiveness, quality, and promotion of planning.
"These awards are a testament to a community's commitment to good planning practices," said Doug McDonald, President of APA-Texas. "Our awards recipients exemplify many facets that make up effective planning - including community engagement, housing, transportation, and economic development. It is an honor to recognize the efforts of elected and appointed officials, residents and businesses, and city planners who all played an important role with the development of these plans and projects."
