In response to a petition filed by the Arlington Professional Fire Fighters Association, Arlington voters will be asked to approve or reject the adoption of the State Civil Service for the Arlington Fire Department during a special election this spring.
The Arlington City Council voted Tuesday, February 14 to place the proposition on the May 6 ballot.
The Arlington Professional Fire Fighters Association collected a sufficient number of signatures to meet the minimum threshold of 1,350 verified signatures required for the Arlington City Council to place the Civil Service proposition before voters.
Arlington fire fighters are currently subject to the City's personnel policies as adopted by Arlington City Council. The State Civil Service System was created by the Texas Legislature and is governed by Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143, which establishes the decision-making process for personnel issues such as hiring, promotions, benefits and the process used for disciplinary actions. Adoption of Civil Service would require the City to establish a Civil Service Commission.
More information about State Civil Service will be available on the City of Arlington's website prior to early voting, which begins April 24.
