Registration is open for this year's Asian Olympic Games, scheduled for March 18 at the University of Texas at Arlington.
This multi-sport tournament for Asian Americans is a Texas tradition that began in 1980 at the University of Texas in Austin. The games rotate between UT Austin, UT Arlington and Texas A&M. The tournament, which combines cultural awareness with competitive sports, is also known by its Vietnamese name, Đại Hội Thể Thao.
The 2017 tournament, expected to draw participants from more than 15 universities, is hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association at UTA.
Players with any degree of Asian ancestry are eligible to play, and non-Asian players may also enter. However, teams are limited to one non-Asian participant per team. All ages and skill levels are welcome, with the most common background expected to be players who are college-aged to mid 30s, and not current or former Division 1 level.
Sports include Basketball, Flag Football, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball. All sports, except Tennis, are team sports. Tennis is individual competition. Sites include UT Arlington's Maverick Activities Center and the Intramural Fields/Recreational Complex (Flag Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer) and Arlington Tennis Center (Tennis).
Net proceeds for the Asian Olympic Games go to charity, with the Catalyst Foundation's Project Backpack being this year's beneficiary. Project Backpack provides education, resources and other needs to financially challenged children and communities, and targets fighting child trafficking.
