It's 2017 and virtual reality, or VR, is here. You may have seen commercials full of people wearing headsets, but have you tried it out? The Arlington Public Library is giving teens and tweens the chance to try VR firsthand at Virtual Reality Experience.
Virtual reality is a digital simulation of a three-dimensional environment, which can be interacted with using special equipment like gloves or helmets. VR has been a staple of science fiction for years, but it's now available to consumers. Users can play immersive games, "travel" by viewing VR simulations of real settings worldwide, use non-fiction training software, and more.
Virtual Reality Experience offers visitors ages 10-18 the opportunity to try HTC Vive, a VR headset. The headset blocks out ambient light, so users can completely enjoy their experience. Speakers and hand-held controllers let teens interact with the VR. Registration is not required to attend, although participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. Everyone can watch the technology being used, which is a fun experience on its own.
Virtual Reality Experience is offered twice monthly at the Southeast Branch. The next session is Tuesday, February 14.
