UT Arlington Dept. of Music Performs Special Concert at City Hall
The sounds of music filled Arlington City Hall as the The University of Texas at Arlington's Department of Music performed a special concert in the first lobby today, Feb. 3, 2017. The concert was streamed live and can be seen the City's Facebook page.
The concert was held as part of a conference hosted by UT Arlington for the Society of Composers, Inc. from Feb. 2-4, 2017, the main academic society for composers in this country.
The conference features nine concerts of classical music in three days, involving UT Arlington faculty, students, and guest performers and composers. Musicians from around the country will be flying in to participate.
The concert at City Hall featured performances from a flute quartet (Stephanie Kalina, Carmen Chavez, Shannon Lotti and Mary Heatherly), a solo performance on the flute by UTA Senior Lecturer in Flute Dr. Terri Sánchez, a solo performance on the viola by Genny Triana, The UT Arlington Saxophone Quartet (Mike Nguyen, soprano sax; Long Nguyen, alto sax; Rahim Rupani, tenor sax; Derron Hollingsworth, baritone sax) and a guest performance from The TCU Cello Esemble, directed by Jesús Castro-Balbi.
Last month's episode of "Backstage Arlington" features The University of Texas at Arlington's Music Industry Studies program.
Dan Cavanagh, Associate Professor of Music at UT Arlington, is excited about the future of the music department and the potential audience still available to them throughout The American Dream City.
"One of the department's initiatives as composers is to get music out of the traditional concert hall space and into public space, much in the way that artists have done that with public art initiatives," Cavanagh said.
The Department of Music offices are located in the Fine Arts Building, South Section (700 West Greek Row, Arlington, TX 76010). For more information, please call 817-272-3471.
