Angeles de los Rios and Astrid Gehre highlighted UT Arlington's weekend as the pair claimed the doubles championship at the Midland Fall Invitational.
The pair went 5-0 in the tournament, winning the championship match 6-3 over Texas Tech's Sabrina Federici and Felicity Maltby. In singles, de los Rios advanced into the quarterfinals after a pair of wins that included knocking off fourth-seeded Alexis Pereira from TCU (3-6, 7-5, 6-4). Gehre bounced back from a loss in her opening match to make her way into the semi-finals of the consolation bracket.
Elizabeth Thoms picked up three wins in the main draw as she advanced over eighth-seeded Erin Walker of Abilene Christian to open play. Thoms then defeated Emily Smith of Rice and Tamuna Katubidze of North Texas to reach the semis. However, she'd drop a tough match against No. 6 Felicity Malthy of Texas Tech.
In Flight 2, Jessica Birowski won her opener 6-1, 6-1 vs. Lamar's Talisa Merchiers before falling in three sets in the second round. Birowski competed with Thoms in doubles and swept a team from Rice 6-0 to advance into the quarters.
The women continue their march towards the ITA Texas Regionals in October as they continue play on Sept. 25 at the Rice Invitational.
