The Texas Mavericks were one of several teams competing in the USTA Zone Team Championship at the Arlington Tennis Center late last month.
The Arlington Tennis Center successfully hosted another USTA Zone Team Championships Boys' & Girls' 14s tournament late last month.
The nearly week-long tournament began at check in on Wednesday, July 26 with around 300 players and guests arriving in Arlington. This marked the eighth year that Tournament Director Sheryl Osborn and the Arlington Tennis Center were selected to host this event.
Players from Arizona, the Caribbean, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas were divided into two flights, competing within their flights in round robin format for the first four days of intense matches, until a winning team was determined for each flight.
On Sunday evening, players and other guests attended an outdoor beach pool party at Allen Bolden Pool, highlighted with J. Gilligan's hamburgers, face painting, hula hoop, tic tac toe and of course swimming!
Then, on Monday, July 31, the winners of the two flights played for the Championship, with other teams being paired off to play, as well.
The Texas Mavericks (Cowboys Flight) defeated the Texas Dynamos (Rangers Flight) clinching the Championship, with Missouri Valley Blues (Cowboys Flight) taking home the Team Sportsmanship award.
The tournament was heralded as a huge success by the players, parents and coaches.
'The Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau is excited by the continued success of the Arlington Tennis Center. The recent Zone Team Championships event is a great example of the ATC bringing in yet another first-class event that exposes out of town visitors to Arlington,' said Matt Wilson, Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau director of sports. 'The recruitment, planning and execution of these events take no small measure of work - we recognize how fortunate Arlington is to have an award winning Parks and Recreation Department.'
The next large event for Arlington Tennis Center will be the USTA Texas Championship Major Zone in September.
