Flood-Awareness-Week

While dangerous floods and flash floods are possible throughout the year, they have a higher frequency during spring and summer thunderstorms, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Intense rainfall or slow-moving storms that track over the same areas can cause a rapid rise of water and flash floods can develop within minutes. Governor Greg Abbott recently proclaimed May 21-25, 2018, to be Flood Awareness Week in Texas and Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams presented a similar proclamation on May 22 to the Public Works and Transportation Department. Both our state and local leaders recognize the importance of encouraging our citizens to be prepared for emergencies.

Arlington residents are encouraged to become familiarized with their flood risk by contacting the City of Arlington's Public Works and Transportation Department's Floodplain Administration Division. Our staff can assist in identifying a property's flood hazard risk by providing flood depth and other flood related data, historical flooding information, local drainage issues and other site-specific protection assistance. Our staff is available to explain the natural floodplain functions and discuss protection for these areas. Contact 817-459-6550 for more information.

All residents should know the implications of flood watches and warnings, assemble an emergency supply kit; develop a communication plan for reaching family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers in case of an emergency; and designate a meeting place in case of evacuation.
