It's'the Star of Texas Challenge'and you can join the race.'The City and the Arlington Museum of Art'challenge residents to visit the 20 stars positioned throughout Arlington and check out each artist's interpretation of what makes Arlington the American Dream City!
How does the challenge work?
- Post your photos to the Star of Texas Challenge Facebook page, tweet them at @CityofArlington or post on theCity's'Instagram (cityofarlington) using the hashtags #AmericanDreamCity'and #StarOfTexas.
- You can upload all 20 photos as you go or post them all at once. It's up'to you! We'll keep track of your name if you want to do them one at a'time!!
- In order to win the package of prizes you must take YOUR'picture in front of all 20 stars.
More than 9,780 children, teens, and adults participated in the Arlington Public Library's Summer Reading Club, which came to a close July 30. To celebrate another successful year, the Library has an all-ages celebration planned for this coming weekend.'Families and children are invited to Globe Life Park from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 7 to enjoy the Summer Reading Club Final Celebration. The free event will include access to the Kids Zone, an indoor play space complete with slides, climbing wall, ball pit, and play spaces; crafts; a clown; a juggler; and visits from Ranger Captain, the mascot of the Texas Rangers; and the Dallas Wings Flight Crew.
Virtually unknown photographer Vivian Maier took close to 200,000 photographs while she worked for over 40 years as a nanny primarily on Chicago's North Shore. Born in New York City, Maier's hauntingly beautiful images of street life in the City, Chicago, and Los Angeles weren't discovered until the contents of an abandoned storage unit packed with hundreds of thousands of negatives, hundreds of rolls of film, some printed work and audio recordings were auctioned off. It was then that her talent came to light and told the story of a true creative genius whose life remains shrouded in mystery to this day. 'Calendar Girls' opens at Theatre Arlington in Downtown this Friday, August 5!'When Annie's husband dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for the local hospital by creating and selling a calendar. The show runs until Sunday, August 21. Thursday performances start at 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm and Sunday matinees begin at 2 pm. Retail stores throughout Arlington are preparing for the state's annual Sales Tax Holiday, held this weekend, Friday through Sunday, Aug. 5-7. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than'$100 from sales and use tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend.'Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller's website at'TexasTaxHoliday.org.'This year, shoppers will save an estimated $91.9 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday, which has been an annual event since 1999.
Two country music artists hit the Arlington Music Hall stage this Saturday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m.'Johnny Lee, was born in Texas City, Texas, and is a member of the 'Texas Country Music Hall of Fame'. Johnny Rodriguez has been recognized'for his contributions and place in music's'traditions and history. This artist brings the Hispanic communities and country music together with his bilingual songs. The opening act Saturday night will be Dallas Wayne.'A native of Springfield, Missouri, Wayne'is a singer, songwriter, radio DJ, voice-over artist, actor and music producer who has performed throughout North America and Europe. Need an air-conditioned escape for your kids this summer? Studio Movie Grill in the Arlington Highlands is hosting its Children's Summer Series Monday through Friday for $1. The Children's Summer Series will run every week through Sept. 2. The movies change on a weekly basis but include several classic movies such as Shrek'and Horton Hears a Who. All movies begin at 11 am.
