Arlington's red light camera program officially ended Aug. 11.

The decision to shut down the red light camera program came after Arlington residents approved a charter amendment during the May 9 election, roughly eight years after the program was activated.

City leaders immediately terminated the contract with vendor American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the company that managed the city's red light camera program.

As a result, ATS has removed all 23 red light cameras at 19 intersections throughout the city.

According to the Arlington Police Department, all outstanding violations have been dismissed and registration holds have been cleared.

Ending the red light camera program meant the City of Arlington would lose more than $2 million in revenue that funded 23 police officer positions.

In order to maintain the same level of service offered to the community, money from the City of Arlington's Business Continuity Reserve was used to fund the positions for the remainder of fiscal year 2015.

The Arlington City Council is currently reviewing a budget proposal for fiscal year 2016, which includes funding for the affected positions.
