The Center Street Bridge Project, providing access across Interstate 20 on Center Street, is progressing. The next phase of the project involves the Texas Department of Transportation installing bridge beams over I-20 mainlanes and frontage roads.

Beginning this weekend, drivers traveling Interstate 20 in Arlington should expect several closures and planned detours to impact commutes.

Residents, visitors and businesses should expect the $10.4 million project, which is designed to improve mobility, safety and connectivity, to include a new a four-lane bridge with sidewalk from the existing Center Street north of I-20 and extending south to Bardin Road.

The project is estimated for completion in Summer 2016.

Here is what you need to know to avoid construction jams:

  • Phase I:Friday, June 19, 9 p.m. to noon Saturday. The westbound I-20 mainlanes will be closed from New York Avenue to Cooper Street. Motorists will be detoured to the westbound frontage road. North and southbound Matlock Road and Collins Street will also be closed at I-20 during this closure to facilitate the detour. North and southbound motorists can cross I-20 using Farm-to-Market Road 157/Cooper Street and New York Avenue.
  • Phase II:Tuesday, June 23, 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday. The eastbound frontage road will be closed from Matlock Road to Collins Street. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

"The majority of the Center Street at IH-20 Bridge project is being constructed on vacant right-of-way," said Project Engineer Bob Watson. "Once these closures are behind us there will be little impact on travel in the area during construction. Following construction, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area by providing another option for travel across IH-20."

Additional closures will be necessary this summer to complete the installation of the bridge beams.

This project, which connects to the city council's "Enhance Regional Mobility" priority, is part of the $80 million in road construction projects the city plans to roll out over a two-year period.
