The community is invited to join the City of Arlington next week to celebrate construction of a new downtown library.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the future George W. Hawkes Central Library is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 at Arlington City Hall, 101 W. Abram Street. An on-site reception will follow.
The 80,000-square-foot library, planned with public input, will include features such as public computing areas, digital printing and recording technologies, zoned areas for children's and teens' services, meeting spaces, genealogy and local history space, outdoor gathering space and more.
The $30 million library, which will be located north of City Hall, is expected to open in spring 2018. The project is largely funded by certificates of obligation, a $4.1 million grant from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and $1.3 million from the Parks gas well fund. The Arlington Library Foundation recently launched the Dream: Central capital campaign to raise $4 million in private donations needed to help pay for furniture, fixtures and the latest technology for the future library.
