Surprise Gilman, senior linebacker for Bowie High School's football team, has been selected as the City of Arlington's Student-Athlete of the Month for October 2016.
Lloyd Bryant, Bowie's Linebackers Coach/Defensive Coordinator, raved about Surprise both as a student and as a football player. Coach Bryant said that Surprise is constantly relied on for his excellent leadership skills and is like an extension of the coaching staff on the field.
Surprise is taking multiple AP level courses and has sights set on completing his college degree after high school with aspirations of becoming a cardiologist.
His favorite subjects at Arlington ISD's Bowie High School are English and History, telling us that important life lessons can be learned from both.
The senior's outstanding play on the field has helped Bowie to a 7-2 record (4-2 in district play) under Head Coach Danny DeArman this season. When asked about how he prepares on gameday, Surprise didn't hesitate in describing his love for the game and competition.
"Football is the greatest sport in America and I'm lucky to have played it for four years," Surprise said. "I practice 100 percent, but on game day, I play at 200 percent."
