Four UT Arlington athletes will be heading to the NCAA Championships after three days of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The Mavericks, who had two relay teams and three individuals in action Saturday, failed to add additional qualifiers on the final day.

The highlight of the last day of action came courtesy of the women's 4×400 relay squad of Dasia Rolfe, Tamerah Gorham, Ashly Wright and Taylor Davis. Closing the evening, the quartet ran a school-record clocking of 3:38.86, breaking an old mark that had stood for 22 years. The women placed 18th in the event.

The men's 4×100 relay team, the nation's 12th-fastest unit entering the night, had a controversial struggle on the Mike A. Myers Stadium track. The group, which consisted of Clayton Vaughn, Quentin Butler, Cameron Newson and Tarik Crear, ran a 40.50 to finish 19th among the 24 teams. UTA filed an official protest over an issue in the first exchange zone, but it was denied.

Individually, freshman Chineme Obikudu placed 21st in the women's triple jump with a top mark of 40 feet, 11 3/4 inches among her three attempts. The fourth-highest freshman finisher at the meet, she landed shy of the qualifying mark by one foot.

Tobi Fawehinmi wound up in the 37th position in the men's triple jump. The sophomore posted a mark of 48 feet, 4 3/4 inches in the third and final flight. It was his debut at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Gabriela Alfonzo, who was also making her first-ever appearance at the meet, finished 41st in the women's 5000 meters. The junior completed the distance race with a time of 17:16.44, which was 21st in her opening heat.

UTA's competitors in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13 will be Clayton Vaughn and Quentin Butler in the 100 meters, Emil Blomberg in the 3000m steeplechase and Roland Sales in the high jump.
