Hundreds of little hands got a big treat on Saturday when the Arlington Public Library invited children of all ages to experience the sights and sounds of the second annual Touch-a-Truck event just north of downtown Arlington.
More than 2,500 attendees of all ages explored a larger-than-life playground made up of 25 different vehicles ranging in size from a mail truck to a fire engine. The trucks opened their doors, turned on their lights, and brought out their work equipment and invited children to touch, honk, press, jump, and play to their hearts content.
"He loves seeing big trucks when we're out driving or on road trips," an attendee noted as her grandson raced around the back of an empty moving van with his sister.
The two-hour event featured vehicles from both public and private companies. Five of the City of Arlington's departments provided multiple vehicles: Police, Fire, Public Works and Transportation, Parks and Recreation, and Water Utilities.
"Our crews had a great time showing Arlington kids and adults the equipment we use to bring them great tasting, high quality water," Adam Stark, interim field operations manager for water utilities, said. "We're always eager to meet the residents we serve and share Arlington Water Utilities' story."
Other vehicles that participated in the event included a USPS mail truck, a FedEx truck, an ambulance, a petroleum carrier, a moving van, a disaster recovery truck, and the Library's own TechLiNK.
The morning's activities also included truck-themed storytimes, an arts tent, and book checkout from the library's Literacy LiNK.
