On Sunday, November 2nd, LUNGevity Foundation, the nation's largest organization dedicated to research for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, is hosting Breathe DFW, a 1.2 mile walk or 5K walk and fun run, in River Legacy Park.
Jane Elterman, a six year survivor, first joined LUNGevity Foundation last January at the behest of her oncology team. "Participating in Breathe Deep DFW feels like a gift to me! LUNGevity calling me a survivor was the first time I looked at myself that way. Before I was a cancer warrior fighting the most fatal disease with all I had. The word survivor sounded good and made me feel better!" Jane said.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, regardless of gender or ethnicity. About 60% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers. Currently, only 16 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer survive five years post-diagnosis. With early detection, there is hope of long-term survivorship.
On Sunday, November 2nd, Jane will be walking in the annual Breathe Deep DFW Walk at River Legacy Park. "Being part of the team that provides more funding for lung cancer research than any other organization is truly something to be proud of."
LUNGevity Foundation is committed to making an immediate impact on increasing quality-of-life and survivorship of people with lung cancer by accelerating research into early detection and more effective treatments, as well as providing community, support and education for all those affected by the disease. The Breathe Deep DFW Walk and Fun Run is one of more than 80 LUNGevity events that take place annually across the country. Since 2002, they have collectively raised more than $11.4 million. Participants often walk in honor of someone currently battling lung cancer or in memory of someone lost to the disease. Individuals and/or businesses are encouraged to sign up as teams. The event will kick-off at 9 a.m. in the large pavilion of River Legacy Park.
