The Arlington Fire Department's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has named Dave Walker as February's Volunteer of the Month.
Walker has been involved with the Arlington Fire Department for over 10 years. He is a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member and brings excellent knowledge as an amateur radio operator.
He has assisted OEM with programming radios over the years and instructs courses to provide new operators with an FCC license to operate amateur radios.
He has been a long-time participant of OEM's outdoor warning system as they test the sirens for functionality once a month. Walker is also an active amateur radio operator with many other Arlington organizations as well.
When OEM called on our CERT volunteers for assistance during a search and rescue operation, Walker gratefully arrived as an extra resource for first responders.
For special events in Arlington, like the Lone Star Half Marathon, he assisted with radio communications throughout the duration of the race.
Walker maintained situational awareness of the runners and called in assistance when /if a runner was in need.
He has also assisted Arlington's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during activations providing helpful amateur radio support.
He is trained by the National Weather Service as a Storm Spotter and provides Arlington EOC with field reports during severe weather.
