April 6 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Scheduled for Randol Mill Park’s New Sustainable Concession Building
City of Arlington's New Solar Powered Building Uses Less Energy and Water Thanks to Financial Support from Chevrolet's Participation in EcoMedia's EcoAd Advertising Program
The new sustainable concessions and restroom building at Randol Mill Park is opening its doors to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 6, at 9:00 am.
The event will be hosted by Arlington Mayor Pro Tempore Kathryn Wilemon; Arlington Council Member Charlie Parker; Chevrolet Regional Marketing Manager Steve Flynn; and EcoMedia Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development Dan Rodrigues. Special guests will include players, coaches from the Miracle League who will also be celebrating the league's opening day, attended by Miracle League fans and family members.
The new solar powered building was made possible through Chevrolet's participation in CBS EcoMedia's EcoAd advertising program. The unique partnership between the City of Arlington, Chevrolet and EcoMedia began in 2011 with the first phase of the project, which funded the sustainable landscape design and installation for the Barrier-Free Playground at Randol Mill.
"We're very excited to be back at Randol Mill Park in Arlington for opening day of the Miracle League and for a brand new season when it comes to sustainability and environmental stewardship', said Steve Flynn, Chevrolet Regional Marketing Manager. "We continue to make real and steady progress working to reduce our own carbon emissions across the many disciplines of Chevrolet's operations and we're proud to be able to help this community do likewise with their neighborhood park. Our EcoAd advertising partnership with EcoMedia made it possible for us to help fund the environmental improvements at the new concession/restroom building that will be cutting water use by 20% and energy use by 20%. Chevy is proud to help make Randol Mill Park a cleaner, greener place to play for today's kids and all the kids who come after them.'
"The EcoMedia team is delighted to help Arlington celebrate the grand opening of the new facilities at Randol Mill Park,' said Paul Polizzotto, President and Founder of CBS EcoMedia. "It's always gratifying to experience first-hand, the tangible results of our EcoAd program and to meet the members of the community who will directly benefit from them. This project simply would not have been possible without the committed, on-going support of our advertising and municipal partners. EcoMedia is exceedingly proud to have collaborated with Chevrolet and the City of Arlington to construct this new concession and restroom building that is not only functional and beautiful to look at, but will also have a positive environmental impact in Arlington for generations to come.'
Some of the eco-friendly features of the new Restroom/Concession Building include:
- The use of local materials for the roof, building blocks, concrete pavement and 54% of the structural steel.
- The sustainable building design features careful positioning of the building, which allows for adequate shade cover for patrons.
- The shape and material of the roof allows for a reduction of the heat island effect. Additionally, low and no V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints and sealant materials were used.
- Water conservation efforts including the addition of an "Insta Hot' water system. This tankless system makes hot water on demand, saving water and energy consumption. Low flow toilets and sinks were also installed to conserve additional water.
- The use of a photovoltaic solar panel system, which generates 4 KW of electrical power for the building. This clean, green renewable energy offsets the power used during the day with excess power sold back to the electrical provider.
- Motion light sensors in each room detect occupancy motion and reduce energy use when the room is empty by turning off the lights. The use of energy efficient LED and Florescent lighting also reduces power consumption. Overall energy use is projected to be cut by 30%.
