UConn's Niels Giffey
It was epic.
Final Four MVP Shabazz Napier and his UConn Huskies withstood a furious rally to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. It was the team's fourth national championship. Napier and his teammate Ryan Boatright continued to apply defensive pressure, this time collecting six steals between them.
Before cutting down the nets Monday, players celebrated by putting on "Lone Star Statement' t-shirts and championship hats. While the UConn fans here in AT&T Stadium cheered for their Huskies squad, the fans back at the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs, CT couldn't contain themselves.
When the Final Four began, most experts didn't give UConn a chance at the national title. The lack of attention seemed to give this team an edge.
"Honestly, I want to get everyone's attention right quick,' said Shabazz Napier. "Ladies and gentleman, you are looking at the hungry Huskies. This is what happens.'
UConn has won each of the last Final Fours played in the state of Texas (2004 in San Antonio, 2011 in Houston and 2014 in Arlington).
The record two-day attendance for the 2014 Final Four was 156,682.
