The City of Arlington is joining the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) and other North Texas cities in an anti-litter, public awareness campaign aimed at improving water quality in the region.
Buzz Pishkur, Director of Water Utilities, hopes the "Reverse Litter' campaign will raise public awareness about how roadside litter can pollute the area's water supplies.
"The plastic bottles and wrappers you see on the side of a road get washed down storm drains into creeks and, eventually, into our reservoirs,' said Pishkur. "Litter not only looks bad, but it can potentially have a serious impact on our environment and on the quality of the water we drink and use every day.'
One of the initiatives created by this campaign is "Ten on Tuesday,' a challenge to DFW businesses, schools, community groups, and individuals to pick up ten pieces of litter every Tuesday.
"Picking up 10 pieces of trash one day a week may not seem like a lot,' said Linda Christie, TRWD Director of Community and Government Relations. "But if thousands of people across North Texas commit to this effort every Tuesday, it can have a tremendous impact on the environment and help protect our water supplies.'
The "Reverse Litter' campaign will feature TV and radio commercials, billboards, internet ads, a Web site, children's educational programs, and an interactive social media presence.
