The Arlington City Council appointed Teris Solis as the new city attorney during its Jan. 13 meeting. She replaces Jay Doegey who retired in December after serving the city for 28 years. Solis worked previously as assistant city attorney for the City of Arlington.
"It is with great pleasure that we appoint Teris Solis to the position of city attorney," Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said. "Teris is committed to serving the citizens of Arlington and the whole City Council as our chief legal officer. She welcomes this new opportunity to help tackle the unique challenges we face as a city government every day."
Ms. Solis began working with the City of Arlington in 1991. Her principle areas of responsibility include(d) handling contract, economic development and environmental matters; advising City Council and City staff relative to State of Texas procurement and bonding law; handling contract claims and litigation; advising City boards and entities; and handling issues relative to open records and open meetings, budget and property tax rate adoption and agenda matters.
Prior to joining the City of Arlington, Solis was in private practice where her primary areas of practice were personal injury litigation and family law. She spent five years teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington in the Continuing Education department, and three years at Texas Wesleyan University in the Legal Studies undergraduate department. In 1996, she co-authored a family law textbook for use in paralegal programs.
Solis is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington and Southern Methodist University Law School. She currently holds a designation as a Local Government Fellow from the International Municipal Lawyers Association.
