On Tuesday, September 3, Arlington business owners will stand with local and state leaders to discuss their support for the Marketplace Fairness Act. U.S. House Representatives Joe Barton and Marc Veasey will be available to discuss their support for this proposed legislation that is pending in Congress. The Marketplace Fairness Act is bipartisan legislation that would authorize states to collect sales and use taxes from out-of-state remote retailers.
The Marketplace Fairness Act would level the playing field for all retailers, help streamline sales tax laws and improve sales tax compliance with a minimum of inconvenience for both retailers and consumers. " The challenges faced by small businesses in Arlington are indicative of the impact on countless other businesses around the country," said Mayor Robert Cluck. " We must support the businesses that are the backbone of our community."
Arlington Camera is a family-owned and operated business that has been in Arlington for nearly 30 years. In recent years, the store has seen an increase in " show-rooming" -potential customers checking out the products at the store and then purchasing them online to avoid paying taxes.
Council Member Jimmy Bennett, who has worked with Arlington Camera to advocate for this proposed legislation said, " Arlington Camera and other brick-and mortar retailers are not asking for special treatment. They are simply asking to be allowed to compete on a level playing field based on price and service."
