A record crowd filled AT&T Stadium Saturday afternoon for an international showdown between Mexico and Ecuador during a World Cup warm-up match. Pavel Pardo, one of the most iconic players in Mexican history, joined the pro-Mexico crowd to cheer on his fellow countrymen.
In a bruising game televised by ESPNews and Univision, Mexico topped Ecuador 3-1 in front of 84,476 fans- a venue record crowd for a soccer match in Texas.
Unfortunately, Mexico lost a key member of its midfield to a gruesome injury. Two minutes after Luis Montes scored the goal that put Mexico ahead of Ecuador for good, Montes and Ecuador's Segundo Castillo collided and went down chasing a loose ball. Castillo limped off the field, but did not return. Montes stayed on the ground, writhing in pain. He ultimately went to the hospital with broken lower right leg.
Mexico has two more exhibitions- one against Bosnia -Herzegovina on Tuesday in Chicago and the other against Portugal on Friday in Foxborough, MA. The team's World Cup opener against Cameroon is in Brazil on June 13.
