When Homeless Assistance Specialist Trelisha Ratliff arrived to work last month, she discovered a suitcase and a note written by someone with plans to end their life.

What happened next involved a quick and coordinated response effort from the Arlington Police Department, social service providers and UT-Arlington Police.

"A human life is valuable and precious," said Housing Authority Executive Director David Zappasodi. "It is comforting to know that the systems in place in our community are working effectively and collaboratively. It is rewarding to know that we are all part of a team that provides help and meaningful assistance to those who are most vulnerable in our community."

According to Zappasodi, the woman arrived early at the Housing Assistance Office with her luggage. She left the luggage that contained her possessions along with a letter, asking the Housing Authority to contact her adult sons and give them a message that said, "Goodbye." The woman also wrote briefly about the struggles she experienced in life.

When Ratliff discovered the luggage and the note, she immediately called 9-1-1. Responding to the call was North Patrol Officer Jonathan Sosa. Officers Stephanie Gillespie and Sheila Griffith provided ancillary support. Within hours on this cold frigid morning, the woman was located safely inside a building on the UT-Arlington campus. She was transported to the JPS hospital in Fort Worth for medical treatment.

"This incident clearly shows that the safety net works in Arlington because of the great partnerships and collaborative efforts that we've put in place," said Officer Stephanie Gillespie.

City Manager Trey Yelverton presented each response team member with a certificate of commendation.

According to city officials, tomorrow looks brighter for the woman who is also receiving medical treatment and is on a road to recovery and stability.
