During Thursday night's regularly scheduled board meeting, the Board of Trustees voted to open the majority of AISD schools to transfers for students inside and outside the district's attendance boundaries. The four elementaries with new attendance boundaries this year- Adams, Atherton, Hale and Johns- will be closed to transfers while attendance at each of those campuses is balanced under the new boundaries.

The AISD has a long history of offering students and their families school choice, but it has been more than a decade since the AISD has opened all secondary schools to transfers.

"Now more than ever the AISD offers families the ability to choose the school that best meets the educational needs of their children,' Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos said. "Fostering student success is an integral part of the district's Achieve Today. Excel Tomorrow. strategic plan. Providing students the option to transfer to another school within the district gives them greater choice and flexibility when it comes to receiving a quality education that best meets their needs and those of their family.'

Last fall, the Board of Trustees approved a change to the AISD transfer policy that allows students who live within the city limits of Arlington but are not within the AISD attendance boundaries to transfer to one of our schools without paying tuition. There is a $100 transfer fee.

Requests for new transfers for the upcoming school year will be accepted beginning March 2 from 8 a.m. to noon at the AISD Administration Building, 1203 W. Pioneer Pkwy. Parents will be allowed to start camping in the east parking lot Monday, Feb. 25. A $50 fee will be charged to parents choosing to camp in the east lot. The accounting department will collect fees and provide each camper with a permit that must be on display at all times. New in-district transfer requests will be processed from March 2 to 28. For in-district transfers, if a requested grade level or school has no openings, a waiting list will be established; parents may sign their child up on two school's waiting lists. Parents with children not zoned to attend the AISD may place their child on the wait list for two schools. Schools will notify parents on waiting lists in August if there are openings.
