Newly elected City council member Michael Glaspie was sworn-in Tuesday night during a special meeting of the City Council. Glaspie, an education minister at Mount Olive Baptist Church, was elected to fill the unexpired term of at-large District 8 councilmember Gene Patrick.
After taking the oath of office with his wife at his side and dozens of supporters in council chambers, Glaspie thanked the community and his church family.
"Times like this will leave you speechless and you know that is something for a preacher," said Glaspie. "I was blessed to serve this country. It was amazing the feeling you have to carry the armor as a warrior and I look forward to serving this community in the same kind of commitment and capacity."
District 2 Council Member Sheri Capehart, District 6 Council Member Robert Shepard and District 7 Council Member Jimmy Bennett were also re-elected. Capehart and Shepard were sworn-in following Glaspie; Bennett will be sworn during the regularly scheduled council meeting on June 5th.
Voters will go to the polls again on June 23rd to decide the District 1 race. Bill Verkest and Charlie Parker are candidates in that runoff election.
