Approximately two years ago the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department had a vision of creating a Community Garden. Without the passion and dedication of Bill Gilmore, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, this project would not be where it is today.

Gilmore started the project from the ground up, seeking a location that would be centrally located for residents, finding partnerships, and encouraging community support. "The University of Texas at Arlington was an integral player in bringing this initiative forward. With their involvement and support, and the selfless service of our dedicated gardeners, this project has been and continues to be a success", stated Gilmore. Since the opening of the garden in March 2011 all garden plots have been contracted to residents for maintenance and oversight.

Other groups have helped with the Community Garden at UT Arlington as well. In October 2011, the Sunshine Rotary Club constructed a shade arbor. Since 2011 more than 200 UT Arlington students and other community volunteers have donated time and expertise to build, maintain and harvest the garden.

The garden, located at 406 Summit Avenue on the UT Arlington campus, is the host of more than 40 varieties of fruits and vegetables being grown and harvested.

Food donations amounting to 50 percent of each plot's production are directed to Mission Arlington in an effort to help those most in need. In 2011 over 800 pounds of produce was donated. Since January of this year, more than 250 lbs of fresh produce from 77 active plots has already been donated.
