Holiday-Lights-Parade-Story

A procession of multicolored sparkling lights, ornate floats and festive locals kicked off the Christmas season during the 2014 Holiday Lights Parade Saturday night in "The American Dream City."

Guests sat on lawn chairs and blankets, which they placed along the curbs of Abram Street and Main Street. Children waved glow-in-the-dark sticks as participants of the procession passed waving, singing and cheering with holiday spirit.

The lyrics "it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you," echoed from the multiple speakers as night fell and temperatures remained in the mid-50s.

From chanting high school cheerleaders and UT-Arlington students to gleaming floats from local businesses, nearly 100 entries debuted their holiday creativity, dazzling the crowd in the process.

Onlookers saw Elvis look-alikes as The World-Famous Wheelie-ing Elvi popped wheelies on their minimotorcycles and circled around one another down Main and Abram Streets.

Hula hoops glowed in the dark as Arlington business owner, Geri McNeice, and members of her hula hooping company, The Hoop Shack, twirled and spun hula hoops down the procession.

Steven Owen, general manager at Texas Appliance in Arlington, helped prepare his company's float as a first-time participant in the annual Holiday Lights Parade. Appearing as a kitchen and dining room, the float gave off the feeling of family togetherness and being home for the holidays, Owen said.

After the last float finished the procession, attendees gathered near the 50-foot Christmas tree in front of City Hall to help Mayor Robert Cluck and other community leaders count down from 10.

At the end of the countdown, the leaders pulled down on a switch, which lit up the Christmas tree and illuminated the night sky.
