On November 9, Guitar Fort Worth performed a special concert for patrons at the George W. Hawkes Central Library as part of an ongoing partnership between the two.
Guitar Fort Worth is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to preserving the traditions of classical guitar and expanding the instrument's horizons through outreach and education. Their work includes mentoring young players, sponsoring professional master classes and performing free concerts such as their performance at the library.
Guitar Fort Worth's artistic director Michael Dailey led the concert. Mr. Dailey has played classical guitar since childhood and currently teaches at Texas Wesleyan University, Tarrant County College and his own private studio. In between songs, he told the audience interesting snippets of music history, described his artisan-crafted guitar and talked about the scholarship program that Guitar Fort Worth offers to its younger students.
Although Mr. Dailey and many other members of Guitar Fort Worth are classically trained, the group is open to anyone. Member Karen Foley described how she began playing with Guitar Fort Worth as a beginner. Even though she could only play a few notes, she provided the steady backbone of ensemble pieces. Her experience shows that anyone can get involved in the arts.
Guitar Fort Worth will be back for another concert on February 15, 2015 at 3 p.m. at the Southeast Branch Library's Community Room. Mark your calendar for another great performance!
