Beginning August 1, a pavement evaluation vehicle will wind its way through the northern third of the City, from Park Row to the City's northern border. The vehicle will also evaluate some streets around Lake Arlington and in the Great Southwest Industrial District. South Arlington was assessed last year.
This high-tech vehicle will survey streets and capture high quality digital images of pavement surfaces. The technology aboard the vehicle will record the degrees of roughness and distress along street surfaces. Sue Berger, Asset Analyst for the City's Public Works and Transportation Department, anticipates data collections to be completed by August 9, weather permitting.
ARA, a national research and engineering company, is beginning its seventh cycle of digital data collections for the City of Arlington. The ARA vehicle captures images of surface pavement and rights of way without endangering drivers. City engineers can then use the data collected to effectively manage street maintenance costs to Arlington taxpayers.
This survey is part of a pavement management program funded by the City's street maintenance sales tax, which was first established in September 2002. The tax is subject to re-authorization by Arlington voters every four years. Voters re-authorized the tax in 2010. It will be on the ballot again for voters in 2014.
