UT Arlington senior guard Reger Dowell was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday by both the Sun Belt and College Sports Madness.
Dowell led the Mavericks to a perfect 2-0 week by averaging a team-high 21.5 points in wins over Troy and South Alabama. The senior guard came off the bench in both games as he continues to work his way back into the lineup after a leg injury.
Dowell nailed a game-winning 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left Thursday to lift UTA to a 59-56 victory over the Trojans. He finished with 22 points on 8-18 shooting, including five 3-pointers. He followed that up with 21 points on 6-14 shooting in Saturday's 73-65 win over USA.
Dowell, the leading scorer in the SBC and 14th nationally, has scored in double figures in all 17 of his games and has hit the 20-point plateau 11 times. Since returning from his injury, the Mavericks are 3-0 and he's been the leading scorer in all three games.
Dowell and the Mavericks are back in action Thursday at Western Kentucky to start a two-game SBC road trip that ends Saturday at Georgia State. UT Arlington is 9-10 overall and 4-3 in the Sun Belt Conference.
UTA's three-game conference winning streak is tied for the second-longest current streak with Western Kentucky. UTA is tied for fourth place with Arkansas State in the league standings.
