On the Clock is a show that gives residents an inside look at the hard work city employees do every day to make Arlington a better community to live, learn, work and play.
This month's episode, hosted by City Manager Trey Yelverton, gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at the Arlington Landfill, located at 800 Mosier Valley Road. While the City owns the landfill, Republic Services has a contract with the City to conduct daily operations.
All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meets all federal, state and local regulations. There are many environmental protection systems at the Arlington Landfill, including rainwater collection, groundwater monitoring, gas collection and final capping, which is a cover designed to keep liquids out and gases in to aid in the protection of the environment. Collected gas is cleaned and piped to a treatment plant for reuse as an alternative fuel.
The southeast portion of the Arlington Landfill, visible from Collins Street, is currently undergoing a transformation from towering, dirt-covered mounds into a sloped landscaped area featuring flowering trees, bushes and ornamental grasses. Work will include installing a base layer of engineered soil liner and cover soils, incorporating an irrigation system and drainage structures, and planting enhanced vegetation and grasses.
Arlington residents may drop off the items below at the Public Convenience Center at the landfill free of charge:
- PCs, Laptops, Servers, networking equipment, cell phones, MP3 Players, Pagers, PDA/Tablets, External Hard Drives, Video Game Systems, Cable Set-Top boxes and circuit boards.
- Scrap metal and home appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers.
