On Sunday, November 11, the City of Arlington celebrated the grand opening of six 10 and under youth tennis courts at the Arlington Tennis Center. The facility's expansion was made in partnership with USTA's program, 10 and Under Tennis, which provides the resources needed for youth tennis programs that teach kids the game in a fun and fast-paced environment.
Dignitaries such as Mayor Robert Cluck and Ken McAllister, Executive Director of USTA Texas, were on hand to join the celebration as well as highlight significant efforts by The City of Arlington to help youth grow healthy habits in safe environments. Their comments were followed by a unique ceremonial "first serve" on the courts and free games for kids to work on their skills. Not only was the "first serve" fun for kids, but it was also fun for the adults involved as dignitaries laughed and joked with each other on their serves afterwards. Sheryl Osborn, Facility Manager for the Arlington Tennis Center, took it as affirmation that the adult programs her team is developing for these smaller courts will be a big hit with those wanting to learn how to play.
"Although these courts are designed for youth, our facility is developing programs for people of all ages to learn the game and improve their skills on these courts," said Osborn. "Tennis is a lifetime sport and there are many adults that never had a chance to learn, so we want to provide an unintimidating way for them to start playing."
The Arlington Tennis Center was among the first to adopt the new 10 and Under format for youth in Texas. Courts, equipment and scoring are adapted for those new to the game so they develop skills and have fun right from the start, according to USTA. Players are divided into ability levels and immersed into the game as soon as possible so that friendly competition motivates them to improve their skills in a fun environment.
"After years of using regulation-sized courts marked up with tape and modifications for classes, we are delighted to have a new home for our kids to learn and enjoy tennis," said Gary Packan, Assistant Director of Arlington Parks and Recreation.
