Eighth Annual Women's 5K and Kid's 1 Mile Fun Run Benefits SafeHaven Shelter
On Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 9 a.m., the Jiggle Butt Run takes off at College Park Center at The University of Texas at Arlington (601 Spaniolo Dr.) and meanders through surrounding neighborhoods in the Downtown Arlington area. Women and children from all over North Texas are invited as the community works to raise money and gather donations for SafeHaven, the only domestic violence shelter in Tarrant County.
"The Jiggle Butt Run creates a community conversation about the issue," said Mary Lee Hafley, CEO of SafeHaven. "These women keep the discussion alive in the community."
In 2012, the Jiggle Butt Run raised $20,000 for SafeHaven by 2,500 participants! Women in the 5k run are encouraged to create a team of five or more. Teams are eligible for awards, such as: best team name, most spirited, and fastest team (combined times from ChampionChip Timing devices of first three team members). There is also a Kid's Wiggle Butt 1 Mile Fun Run, for boys and girls under age 12, starting at 8:15 a.m.
About 1 in 4 women have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner, according to the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey by the CDC. Last year, SafeHaven protected 5,781 women and children through emergency shelters, outreach centers, and housing. Counseling and legal services are also available to help women and their children break the cycle of abuse.
The Jiggle Butt Run 5k course is USATF certified. Teams of five or more can register for $20 a person and individuals can sign up for $25 each. The Kid's Wiggle Butt 1 Mile Run is $15. Race packet pick-up is January 2-3 at The Runner located at 3535 W. Pioneer Parkway, 76013 or on race day at 601 Spaniolo Dr., 76019.
