After traveling to art shows across the country for the last eight years, Arlington artist Steve Moya wanted his hometown to host its own fine arts festival, so he created Art on the Greene.

Art on the Greene is a free, three-day juried arts festival that features 75 artists from a variety of mediums, live entertainment from prominent local musicians, and food from local vendors. The festival runs March 23-25 and appropriately takes place at Richard Greene Linear Park, home of Caelum Moor, a five-acre work of art created by sculptor Norm Hines.

Moya had been considering putting the show together for the last three years, but he decided to take action on his vision as he was traveling home from a show last summer.

"I had to take a leap of faith and say that I'm going to do it. It's not something that just happens. Somebody somehow some way has to get that ball rolling," Moya said.

It's a juried show, which means that each artist's work was reviewed for quality, style and presentation before being allowed to participate in the festival. Types of art include paintings, jewelry, ceramics, photography, glass, mixed media, sculpture, wood, and metal.

To accompany the top-tier art, Moya recruited ten musical acts to perform. Austin soul-funk band Mingo Fishtrap will be live Saturday night at 8:30 and the UTA Jazz Orchestra will perform Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Local eateries will be there as well. Grease Monkey Burger Shop & Social Club, Jim and Lor's Candy Store, Old School Pizza & Suds, and Ventana Grille are just a few of the food vendors participating.

The consensus among the artists and City is that the event is happening at a perfect time, in the perfect place.

"Originally when we were constructing Caelum Moor, one of things we hoped to see happen was an arts festival there," said Gary Packan, Arlington's assistant director of Parks and Recreation.

Plus, the City was thrilled to have a resident spearhead a festival of this magnitude.

"It's great to see an Arlington resident step up and put on an event like this," Packan said. "Art on the Greene is going to continue to put Arlington on the map as an event destination."

Glass artist Leslie Friedman and metal artist Denise Dyer, both Arlington residents, are happy to support the cause and share their work with the public.

"We need to do things in our hometown to bring the community together. With everything that Arlington is doing now, it's really enhancing the city," Friedman said.
