Every Drop Counts!
Did you know that an American home can waste, on average, more than 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks?
"Fixing common leaks in the home can save a family up to 10% on their water bill and the savings can really add up over time," says Dustan Compton, conservation program coordinator for the City of Arlington.
Nationwide, more than 1 trillion gallons of water leak from U.S. homes each year. That's why we should check our plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems each year during Fix a Leak Week, March 12-18.
"After the worst drought on record last year, it is even more important for everyone to check their home for leaks and make simple repairs because the water savings can extend our water resources," said Compton.
It's as easy as 1-2-3!
A leaky toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water per day. Find silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank and seeing if it appears in the bowl before you flush.
Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, and fixture connections. Don't forget to check irrigation systems and spigots too.
