Low-Flow Showerhead Exchange Highlights Arlington Observances

The City of Arlington is partnering with the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to sponsor National Drinking Water Week , which is celebrated May 5-11 as a way of increasing public awareness of drinking water. The AWWA, with more than 60,000 members, is the oldest and largest nonprofit organization dedicated to safe water in North America. National Drinking Water Week is a time to reflect and appreciate the value high-quality tap water provides for our community, including public health and fire protection, support for the economy and quality of life.

The week includes a May 7 proclamation from the Mayor and a high-efficiency showerhead exchange Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 17. The Water Utilities Department will also publish its annual Water Quality Report to customers in the May water bill.

" Water plays a critical role in our daily lives and the quality of life we enjoy," said Water Utilities Director Walter " Buzz" Pishkur. " As water professionals, we work diligently everyday with the trust provided to us to serve the community our most vital resource of clean and affordable drinking water."

As we move into the hot summer months, this is a good time to remind customers about the importance of ways we can conserve water. The Arlington Water Utilities Department reminds residents and businesses about the landscape watering ordinance, which prohibits outdoor watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Watering before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. saves water because less water is lost to evaporation during the hottest part of the day. To maintain a strong root system during summer months, Texas landscapes may require watering to a depth of one-inch every five to seven days. Customers are also encouraged to permanently adopt a twice per week watering schedule over the summer months to help with long-term water conservation supply.

How to Get a Free Low-Flow Showerhead: Visit the Water South Service Center at 1100 SW Green Oaks Blvd. or the Customer Service Center in City Hall at 101 W. Abram St. to receive high-efficiency showerheads to be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. Customers must bring their old showerhead in order to receive a free replacement. Limit two showerheads per household. High efficiency showerheads can help reduce energy and water usage by as much as 20 percent.
