Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams thanks Dr. Allan Saxe and Ruthie Brock for their $25,000 donation to support the new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.
The Arlington Public Library has received a $25,000 donation from Dr. Allan Saxe and Ruthie Brock in support of the new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.
Dr. Saxe and Ms. Brock are long-time library supporters who are excited to continue their advocacy as the library grows.
Dr. Allan Saxe learned to love libraries when he was "real little" in Oklahoma City. As a child, he spent hours there looking at magazines and newspapers. He also liked going to the YMCA to play ping pong. These early memories grew into a lifelong appreciation for libraries and other welcoming community centers.
Ruthie Brock also recognizes that the library has something for everyone in the community. Many years ago, she got involved in grassroots advocacy to supplement the Arlington Public Library's budget. After organizing a City Council presentation with representatives from various library groups, she was invited to serve on the Library Advisory Board. Ms. Brock was chair of the Board when the Southwest Branch was built and the Northeast Branch renovated. She and Dr. Betsy Burson, Library Director at the time, raised $75,000 to cover cost increases during construction. Ms. Brock helped to establish the Arlington Public Library Foundation board where she served as chair. Currently, she is on the board of the newly merged Friends & Foundation of the Arlington Public Library.
Dr. Saxe and Ms. Brock's generous donation will fund a technology helpdesk at our new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. Users will be able to receive assistance with their devices from our library experts at this station. Since technology is becoming a vital part of everyday life, the helpdesk will provide a vital service to Arlington residents. The library is grateful for Dr. Saxe and Ms. Brock's years of continued support.
