Arlington’s Fire Station No. 5 Awarded LEED Certification
Arlington Fire Station No. 5
The City of Arlington is proud to announce that the recently rebuilt Fire Station 5 has been awarded LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC).
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system developed by the USBGC is the most widely used green building system and provides a concise framework for owners to create highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. To be considered for this distinguished designation the project was required to meet all the following requirements:
- Comply with environmental laws;
- Be a complete, permanent building;
- Use a reasonable site boundary;
- Comply with minimum floor area requirements;
- Comply with minimum occupancy requirements;
- Commit to sharing whole-building energy and water usage data; and
- Comply with a minimum building area to site area ratio.
The new 10,036 square-foot brick and stone building replaced a 3,754 square foot building that opened in 1963 to provide protection for the Great Southwest Industrial Park. The new facility also serves as home to the Arlington Fire Department's Office of Special Events, which works closely with the Department of Public Works' engineering staff and the Arlington Police Department to provide public safety management, planning, and resources for homeland security or large special events within Arlington.
The innovative design of the building is the result of a collaborative effort between the City's Construction Management Division and staff from RPGA Design Group, Inc.
Fire Station 5 joins Fire Station 9 and the Arlington Municipal Airport as having achieved LEED certification and represents the City's commitment to promoting a sustainable environment to enhance the quality of life for Arlington's residents and visitors.
