More than 200 residents enjoyed delicious barbeque and festive Christmas carols on Dec. 12, 2024, at the 25th annual Mayor’s Holiday Luncheon.
The luncheon, held at the Bob Duncan Center, is organized by Parks and Recreation for senior residents who are active in recreation center classes and programming. Spring Creek Barbecue has been the generous event sponsor since former Mayor Elzie Odom started the holiday tradition during his tenure from 1997 to 2003.
Mayor Jim Ross, several Arlington City Council representatives, and employees from Parks & Recreation and the Mayor and City Council Office, donned gloves and aprons and served seniors with a smile and a cheerful greeting.
“Arlington taking care of Arlington is the best thing we’ve got going for us. There is nothing that demonstrates that more than our recreation centers taking care of our seniors,” Mayor Ross said.
Friends Eve Osbakken and Nancy Schaefer were among the luncheon attendees dressed in colorful holiday outfits for the special occasion.
Osbakken, wearing a Santa hat and red scarf, said fitness classes and wellness programs at Cliff Nelson Recreation Center helped her lose more than 60 pounds and improve her mobility and overall health.
“It’s changed my life. I’m not sick anymore. I’m well. You just need to move and cut out sugar,” said Osbakken, an Arlington resident the past 40 years. “I preach the gospel of City of Arlington Parks & Recreation.”
Schaefer, who also enjoys the fitness classes at Cliff Nelson Recreation Center, said she has enjoyed the Mayor’s Holiday luncheon the past six years.
“It’s a nice time to get so many people together. It does wonders for our community,” said Schaefer, wearing jingle bell necklace and headband. “I love spending this time here with all my friends.”
In addition to a visit by the Grinch, entertainment was provided by students from Arlington High School and Martin High School.
“Today we are sharing the spirit of Christmas with our community,” said Recreation Program Coordinator Susie Traylor, who has coordinated the luncheon the past 10 years.
